Infrared Interface Circuit

Connecting two computers together to enable data transfer between the two can be done in several ways.

One method is the use of infrared beam to relay the digital data. One big advantage of the infrared signal against the radio signal is that the infrared is much less sensitive to signal disturbance.

The circuit featured here is a complete infrared transmitter-receiver system. It is made up of two modules.

The first module is an infrared (IR) transmitter which is used as a relay in transmitting digital data. The second module receives the IR beam and demodulates the information back into digital form.

This TX/RX system can be used to replace the classic cable system between computers and periphery devices. Figure 76.0 shows how the transmitter module is connected to the computer.

Figure 76.3 shows how the receiver module is connected to the other computer. To facilitate duplex operation, the two modules must be duplicated and connected to the computers according to the direction of the data flow.

The advantages of using cableless installation are very obvious. No more disturbing cables, freedom in arranging the different peripheries, etc. 

The circuit can be easily adapted to the serial I/O of a computer or a periphery device.

The potentiometer P1 in the receiver module must be adjusted for the best error-free reception.
